Brief History

Following the seizure of schools by the government in the 80s, Uwani, essentially the catchment area of our parish had no meaningful nursery school and very paltry number of elementary schools. Parents who had means and muscles had to go as far as Holy Ghost, and G.R.A. to drop and pick their wards to and from schools. This malaise of the time touched His Lordship, Most Rev. Dr. M. Eneja tremendously. Thus the Sacred Heart Nursery and Primary School was born starting from Nursery 1 on 12th January, 1987 under the proprietorship of Rt. Rev. Dr. M. Eneja the then Bishop of Enugu diocese. The manager was Rev.fr. M. Aluma, while the headmistress was Rev. Sr. S. Anyanwu. The school started with 92 pupils, two teaching staff and two non-academic staff.

Typical and quintessential of Bishop Eneja and Fr. Aluma, the objectives were purely humanitarian and completely devoid of any economic considerations. They were concerned with closing the yawning gap and chasm in existence in education within this area and to expand the scope of enlightenment, sophistication and moral values of the beneficiaries who were expected to garner from the school, and from the grassroots, the simple virtues of honesty, decency, courage and public spiritedness.

Sacred Heart College Uwani Enugu was founded by very Rev Fr. Dr. G.M. Aguigwo and the school’s Board of Governors in the persons of lady C. Odigbo, Ezinna chief. Christian O. Nebonta, chief Emmanuel Chukwuma, Mrs. S. Ezeani, Mrs Rose Ofoegbu and Mr. G.O Ezika. The college was established on the 5th October, 2010. It was formerly called sacred Heart secondary school uwani, Enugu but the name was later changed to Sacred Heart College by the past principal, Lady J.A. Obiakor.

The vision of the college is for it to become one of the foremost secondary schools in Enugu Urban, in Enugu state and in Nigeria, where students graduate with functional knowledge, acceptable character and useful skills and where morality and fear of God are given pride of place. The mission is to produce students who have the passion for knowledge and hard work, and who will lead in their generation with the fear of God; and to offer the best possible education at the lowest possible cost. This is why the founding fathers reduced the school fees to make it affordable by parents and guardians.

The school’s motto is “knowledge and morality”. This means that the school will train students to be knowledgeable in every aspect of life, and to also come closer to God. We have composed an Anthem which constantly reminds the students of the vision of the founding fathers – truth, fairness, justice and self- reliance are our watch word. The college started by admitting only JSS One students and had initially fourteen tutorial and one non tutorial staff. It has since then continued to grow.
